Over time, also, the people governing the resources have a tendency to structure them in ways that don't make sense without CDNs - through decisions about what sorts of things are in-scope to store, how the storage is structured, which types of artifact are treated as authoritative, all that - which makes it hard to go back.
It isn't the type of thing you appear to be concerned about, but it's the type of thing I'm concerned about. If you don't see it as a harm, that's fine and I doubt I'm going to convince you to, but some of us have a problem with it.
